Discovering blond, dubbel, tripel, and quadrupel

Blond, dubbel, tripel, and quadrupel are familiar names in the world of specialty beer. They are strongly associated with the Belgian brewing tradition, but are also brewed by breweries outside of Belgium. From beloved classics to modern interpretations: these four styles offer plenty of room to discover your taste.

In these beers, the interplay between malt, yeast, and hops plays an important role. Malt provides body and can add flavors of bread, biscuit, caramel, or toffee. Yeast can provide fruity and spicy accents, while hops add aroma and bitterness. The balance varies per style and per brewer.

What is the difference between blond, dubbel, tripel, and quadrupel?

Blond beeris usually golden yellow and can be fresh, fruity, or subtly spicy. Some blond beers are soft and accessible, while others are fuller or slightly more bitter.

Dubbelis generally darker and places more emphasis on malty flavors. Think of caramel, bread crust, and fruity notes that can be reminiscent of raisins or plums.

Tripelcombines a usually golden yellow color with a higher alcohol percentage and a fruity, spicy yeast character. Many tripels have a fairly dry finish, which beautifully balances the full flavor.

Quadrupelis usually powerful and rich, with flavors of caramel, dried fruit, and sometimes a warming alcohol accent. A style to taste slowly and discover the different flavors.

By the way, the names dubbel, tripel, and quadrupel do not mean that the ingredients or the alcohol percentage literally double, triple, or quadruple. They are style names, not a fixed calculation.

Which beer style suits you?

Are you looking for something fresh and accessible? Then blondcan be a good starting point. If you like caramel and dried fruit, take a look at dubbel. For lovers of fruity and spicy beers with a bit more strength, tripelis worth discovering. If you are looking for a full, rich flavor, then quadrupelmight suit you well.

Within every style, the differences remain large. A dubbel does not have to be sweet and a blond is not automatically low in alcohol. Therefore, also look at the description of the beer, or ask us for advice.
